CONSPIT CHS vs. DS-8X vs. VNM: Choosing the Right Dual-Mode Shifter for Your Rig

What Makes the CHS Unique
Many dual-mode shifters create sequential mode by restricting the H-pattern mechanism. The CHS takes a different approach. CONSPIT's Dual-Trace Mechanical Architecture gives each mode its own dedicated motion path, so the H-pattern and sequential modes each keep their own distinct mechanical feel.
A few standouts:
Shift force from 3 to 10 kg. That's a wider adjustment range than many dual-mode shifters offer. At the 10 kg setting, Darin found it heavier than the shifter in his own T-56 Camaros, and around 5 kg was his sweet spot.
SnapShift asymmetric sequential throw. The downshift throw is slightly shorter than the upshift, which brings the action closer to a real sequential gearbox.
Mode selector slider. Switch between H-pattern 7+R and sequential in seconds. Both modes can be bound in-game at the same time, so you can switch on track without reconfiguring your controls.
Compact 95 x 165 mm body. Designed to leave more room for mounting a handbrake beside it.
Built for durability. A one-piece aluminum chassis, heat-treated steel key components, and 1,000,000 cycles of durability validation.
It also includes 9 RGB LEDs (gear position or RPM lights through CONSPIT Link 2.0 or SimHub), a transparent side window with a dark-tinted alternate included, and a 50 mm extension link for a taller knob position in sequential mode.
Built With Sim Motion Feedback
During testing, Darin gave CONSPIT one piece of feedback: add flanged mounting plates so the shifter can bolt straight to 80 mm aluminum extrusion with T-nuts, no dedicated shifter plate required. CONSPIT agreed, and those plates will be included with production units. If you run an aluminum profile rig, mounting just got a lot easier.

Simagic DS-8X ($299, sale from $369) has long been a top pick in this price range, and Darin still calls it a great shifter. It offers an 8+R gate, a pull-out gear lock, and USB connection to either your PC or a Simagic wheelbase. It also runs quieter than the CHS, which makes it a smart choice if your rig shares space with roommates or family, or if you're already in the Simagic ecosystem.
VNM Simulation H Pattern and Sequential Shifter ($249.95) is the most affordable of the three. Instead of a mode switch, it uses interchangeable top plates: a 6+R H-pattern plate and a sequential plate both come in the box, and swapping between them takes a couple of minutes with an allen key. Its full aluminum body, adjustable tension, and included quick-release spherical and cylinder knobs make it a strong value pick, especially for drivers who tend to stick with one mode per session and want to keep budget room for other upgrades.
CONSPIT CHS ($369) is built for drivers who want a heavy, deliberate, mechanical shift feel. Its wide force range, dedicated sequential mechanism, and one-piece chassis are all designed around that experience. In Darin's words, it's "probably the best shifter I've ever had attached to any rig I've ever owned." That heavy metal mechanism does produce noticeable shift noise, so it's best suited to a dedicated sim room.
Which One Is Right for You?
Choose the CONSPIT CHS if you're a PC sim racer who wants a heavy, mechanical shift feel with a wide 3 to 10 kg force range, and your sim space can handle some shift noise.
Choose the Simagic DS-8X if you want a proven dual-mode shifter with quieter operation, an 8+R layout, or direct connection to a Simagic wheelbase.
Choose the VNM Simulation if you want both modes at the most accessible price, plus interchangeable knobs and flexible mounting, and you don't need to switch modes mid-session.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the CONSPIT CHS compatible with consoles?
No. The CHS connects to PC over USB and is configured through CONSPIT Link 2.0, with SimHub support for the LED lighting.
Can I use a different shift knob?
Yes. The CHS uses an M10 x 1.5 knob thread, and Darin swapped to an aftermarket round knob during testing.
How do I mount the CHS?
It uses bottom M5 mounting with adapter bars. Production units will also include flanged plates for mounting directly to 80 mm aluminum extrusion.
How loud is it?
As a heavy mechanical shifter, it produces noticeable shift noise, especially at higher force settings. If a quieter shifter is a priority, the Simagic DS-8X is a great option.
